I'm not suggesting that you're that callous--but sometimes I think we turn our logic upside down when we place politics ahead of morality. We should place the highest values -- such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -- above other, secondary concerns.

JackAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-37573293182985988442021-12-30T08:51:49.022-06:002021-12-30T08:51:49.022-06:00Anonymous,

It's really about misusing one's body for extreme self gratification with hardly any recognization of life. Sex should be only between a married man and woman who take full responsibility for the gift it is in bringing God's children into the world. It's no wonder the judgment of the almighty God is upon us- we have taken his most precious gift to us and made it unholy.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02650378831365846625noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-14822103763110824912021-12-29T12:29:12.736-06:002021-12-29T12:29:12.736-06:00I'm often dismayed by the arguments around abo...I'm often dismayed by the arguments around abortion including this post. I believe that in general people want to reduce abortions, but we're usually only talking about the procedure itself (about which there is great disagreement on) rather than the causes leading up to it. Making sure all children are raised in a stable household (fed, clothed, educated, loved) can go a long way to reducing unwanted pregnancies -- we should be looking for policies that support this (e.g. free school lunches, monetary assistance, comprehensive sex education, etc.). We need to support women in the awful situation of being pregnant, alone, and unsure how they'll care for a child. They need viable options and assistance (Neil L Andersen spoke of this in a recent talk). In our society today we give them little help and often they're vilified for being poor and taking government assistance. Beyond that often the health and situation of the mother takes a back seat in many of these conversations. If a doctor recommends it or if the pregnancy is the product of rape or incest we shouldn't be putting up barriers in these cases. The abortion laws working they're way back into our society only criminalize women already in a bad position. I don't believe they will have the desired effects, but will instead push abortions underground making it more dangerous and not reducing them as much as desired. I've also spoken to some women that have decided they never want to have children because if there are complications they know their health and safety would be at risk. And if they have a miscarriage will they be subject to further investigation to determine if they broke the law? Dissuading women from having families is not what I want our laws to do. If you believe these situations are far fetched then advocate forcefully that they are written explicitly into new laws. I'm not sure speaking about the science of pregnancy to make a moral argument against abortion is helpful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-89925894475398606312021-12-29T03:42:13.743-06:002021-12-29T03:42:13.743-06:00Anonymous: "When conservatives acknowledge......Anonymous: "When conservatives acknowledge..."

I think both conservatives and liberals--of the Christian variety--acknowledge the truth of the Ten Commandments.

JackAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-67277847400676538282021-12-29T03:38:27.228-06:002021-12-29T03:38:27.228-06:00Anonymous: "I'll pay attention to your op...Anonymous: "I'll pay attention to your opinion on this matter when you grow a uterus, Jeff."

Well, we've all spent some time there--so none of us come to this argument wholly unqualified.

Jack Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-48854530913432283962021-12-28T09:21:38.069-06:002021-12-28T09:21:38.069-06:00The indoctrination of abortion being a woman's...The indoctrination of abortion being a woman's right is the number one problem, it's become political. If the baby is born we would find it grossly inhumane to kill the baby at that point. Life is life no latter what stage it is at. In reality we are just embryos as adults in our progression to become gods. Would we kill God if we had the chance? We have become absolute murders of God's children. Is God pleased or displeased that millions of his children's lives are snuffed out all in the name of a woman's rights. It's no wonder the judgment of the almighty God is upon us. I'm sorry for whatever educational environment trained you to have such views. I recognize that many universities today fail to help students recognize the terrible fallacy in believing that arguments, logic, and evidence do not matter, that emotion is what matters most, and all it takes to support one's view is to attack one's opponent for having the wrong chromosomes (e.g., gender or skin color) or wrong political views in unrelated areas, prizing anger above the intellect.

The first commenter's implicit logic is that the baby is merely part of the mother's body, and the decision to extinguish the life of the fetus is no different than, say, clipping one's toenails, and not a moral issue of any kind. This is to miss the humanity of the fetus and the massive moral issues before us. It's a terrible blindness. The passionate concern of a male for the unnecessary destruction of millions of fellow male children (along with millions of females as well) has no merit, you say, simply because of his gender.

The logic is dismal: Are only minorities allowed to speak out against racism? Only warriors allowed to speak out against war? The use of this argument is not only painfully illogical, it's hypocritical, for it never seems to be made when men are speaking out for abortion.

If a white woman such as my wife expresses concerns about the racial impact of abortion in preferentially reducing the population of blacks, and mentions the shameful roots of the pro-abortion movement in the racist eugenics of Margaret Sanger, I suppose your response is that only black women can have a say in these issues, is that right? But many black women do speak out on these matters, and are ignored, thanks to the logic of commenter #2.

The second commenter's logic is that the desire to be save an innocent life from violent destruction has no merit if the person with that desire has apparent flaws in unrelated areas that theoretically could result in harms to others. So I assume that smokers, fast drivers, and purveyors of fast food can all be ignored, when convenient, no matter how compelling their logic and how strong the scientific evidence they offer, because you can conjure up an ad hominem claim of hypocrisy. Of course, this is all a smoke screen that will be used when views lack moral, logical, and scientific support. I don't mean to offend by this, but hope to point out that such comments, like many of those one sees on the web, do not engage with the evidence presented or address the crucial issues. They are ad hominem, emotional, and utterly fallacious.
