But I still appreciate the time you took to answer this one. I suppose there really is no good answer to my question about sealings. I see that you truly believe in your religion, and I respect that. I also like your sense of humor. I wish you the best.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-22035850004450939082012-11-05T13:00:03.608-06:002012-11-05T13:00:03.608-06:00I don't mean to overly-simplify it, but a time...I don't mean to overly-simplify it, but a time-out seems like forever to a child when they're being punshed. Personally, I've always thought of hell as a state of mind and not a physical place. So, having some flexibilty with the terms of our punishments, if required, seems like an action that would be taken by an understanding God. To use another analogy, if life is a test and we don't make a good grade, is that all there is? Is the purpose of education to take a test and just receive a grade on a one-time offer? Of course not. The scriptures quoted above read like a deep learning experience and that the pain felt is pain from rapid growth in understanding. That's my take on the pains of hell; it lasts as long as it takes for someone to come to an understanding of the truth.matejohhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17321787969941789572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-61338135215830700062012-10-18T12:27:45.046-05:002012-10-18T12:27:45.046-05:00Loved the post and have pondered often over this p...Loved the post and have pondered often over this passage of scripture. I consider it another piece of revealed doctrine that has been given to use at this time because we were ready for it. A 3 year old misbehaving doesn't need to be told in detail his punishment, but a 17 year old does and how long that punishment lasts.

Jeff, another point I think relates to this is the question: does hell even exist in LDS doctrine? Other than those very few mortals and the 1/3 who followed Satan who will spend time as Sons of Perdition, what else can be considered Hell?

The 3 degrees of Glory are not considered a "Hell" by any standard. They are called "Glories" for a reason. They are degrees of heaven. Sure, one that cannot stand in the presence of God may be considered "Hell" to those who knew they could have aspired to more, but fell short, but is even the Telestial "Kingdom" such a terrible place to assign it the name of Hell?

Here's another interesting poitn I always love to bring up on this topic. A common misconception among Latter Day Saints is the belief that Outer Darkness is reserved for the Sons of Perdition. This is simply false. "Outer Darkness" is simply another title for "Spirit Prison", the temporary place wicked (or more wicked) spirits will reside between death and the Resurrection. Alma explains this, and it is also written in Doctrine and Covenants 76 (particularly verse 32). I get people confusing that ALL the time in Sunday School.CFnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-34264377765214986762012-10-14T13:01:39.318-05:002012-10-14T13:01:39.318-05:00To the first anonymous on Mitt Romney: In the cont...To the first anonymous on Mitt Romney: In the context of Jeff's post, it just means that if Romney is elected, you will apparently suffer eternal torment. But buck up, your eternal torment will last no longer than eight years.

Mark SteeleAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-64220354235707900782012-10-10T16:21:29.529-05:002012-10-10T16:21:29.529-05:00This to me reminds me of how we understand line up...This to me reminds me of how we understand line upon line and precept upon precept. In another Doctrine and Covenants section, 76:5. Two types of people are described. Those who fear God, and those who serve Him. Is God deceptive because he is merciful to those who fear Him, and honors those who serve Him? No. In fact, fearing God is the beginning to getting to know Him. Serving Him is the direct result of being blessed by His mercy. To me the explanation is clear, the words "eternal" and "endless" are to help His children to be open to receive His mercy. Discovering that there IS an end to torment is part of God's mercy.kevinzicohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11112548493734899163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-58457873880928928352012-10-09T13:15:01.529-05:002012-10-09T13:15:01.529-05:00One train of thought you might like to consider is...One train of thought you might like to consider is that the punishment itself is never-ending, but our tenure in that condition is temporary.
Also, the pain and anguish of our souls, the loss inflicted by that separation may pain us for time without end. Just has we sometimes wish we had chosen differently at times in our lives, causing us mental anguish, we may also feel that way then, even while rejoicing the mercy and goodness of God who consigned us to a state of glory, rather than have us cast off and destroyed forever.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139169.post-65487984414969512462012-10-09T10:26:59.229-05:002012-10-09T10:26:59.229-05:00Anonymous,

The example of Alma the Younger, in particular, clearly shows that "eternal" and "endless" are used to mean something other than without end. Though I still have many other questions and concerns, I'm impressed that you were able to answer this one, which I've asked many times and never received a real answer until now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
